Lots of symbolic or spiritual significance of wedding have changed or disappeared over time. However, modern brides and grooms insist on wearing garments because of their ancient superstitions and beliefs.

Grooms’ Wear

In World Wars I and II more men joined the army, the number of grooms married in military uniforms increased. Up to the Civilian 20th and 21th century grooms took Tuxedos as the first choice, which were first worn in England in 1886.

Bridal Dress

Brides did not prefer to choose white for the color of their wedding dress before the 19th century. When Queen Victoria married Albert of Saxe-Coburg with white in 1840, other brides copied her style one after another.

Brides in depression and World War II, which had fabric shortage and rushed weddings, often simply wore their best suits or dresses instead of wedding gowns. After the war, Grace Kelly wore lacy white gown which was popular in the 1950s. Since then “wedding white” was kept as a tradition until today.

Bridal Veils

Brides wore veils as symbols of modesty and virginity which covering their entire bodies in the Roman Empire. Over time, brides prefer worn shorter, less obstructive veils. There are lots of customs about marriage in some Eastern societies, such as the bride’s face cannot be seen by the groom until the end of the marriage ceremony.

The groom opened the bride’s veil at last. Many brides of the 21th century last the tradition of wearing a veil, while others take other things instead, such as tiaras, flowers or other hair accessories.
